Tale of an old man
Old Man: Have you ever wondered, what do you really want in life?
Me: Yes. To be successful.
Old Man: If you go on the streets and tap on anyone on their shoulder and ask them the same question. 10 out of 10 will definitely say they'll want to. But these people think about it and are not doing anything about it. People who wants to do it but yet give up eventually before they start it. Therefore a minority of people are successful, and only 5% of the population are.
Me: Why is that so?
Old Man: 5% of the population. They are highly motivated and determined. They possess self-discipline and never ending fighting spirit. They learn as they pick up new skills, new ideas, new methods and take a business failure as a learning lesson. They've very different in their way of thinking, mindset and goal from the rest of 95% and they are doing their best to make it happen.
Me: Hmm.. Starts to wonder..
Old Man: Here.. Common characteristics of the 95%.
1. Lack of self-discipline. You cant control yourself to do something important. E.g Waking up late for work, miss and important meeting due to the fact that you overslept. The night before you rather spend your time doing something unproductive. Failure to set priorities.
2. Pessimistic people: Everything on earth happens for a reason. But these people choose to view it from the negative point of view.
3. High IQ but low EQ: By saying this i do not mean that not all highly educated people are not successful but few % may be so. Lack of opportunity to apply things they learn from books in actual situation. Even so, people with higher educational level think highly of themselves will never bring themselves down to the lowest level to learn to start climbing. For some reasons, they are unable to understand the essence of communication and handling people in a tactful way. It is not easy to obtain this skill, molding of it takes alot of time and experience. Still, some people can never obtain this skill no matter how hard they try.
4. Inflexibility: This is a more tricky one. People who are stubborn headed who believes in their thinking except anyone's elses will only still to their own methods. However, this can be good or bad. E.g Negotiation of price, seller insists on a certain price. Buyer requests for a lower price. If the seller is not flexible on selling price, he may lose the potential buyer who could be beneficial on the long term business. But by being inflexible, seller is able to maintain a more profitable business. So it all comes to a case-to-case basis. By being inflexible you are merely closing doors of opportunities.
5. Lack of determination: The level of determination is often driven by the desire you hold on what bad you really want a thing. Even so, self motivation and determination must be present at all times. That is why the common saying of " It is of bads times, when great men are borne " is created. E.g Digging underground for gold mine. A person gives up after going 10000metres deep. Who knows there might be gold at the 10001 metres?
6. Castle builders: They usually IMAGINE themselves to be successful and the benefits of been one, but not doing anything at all.
There are several other minor factors, but lets skip it and go to the successful criterias.
Common factors and characteristics of the 5%.
1. Adaptability: Besides been flexible. He/she is able to adapt to any situation, analyze the situation and make the right decision and is able to blend into that situation well.
2. High IQ and EQ: Combining both EQ and IQ, applying useful skills at the critical moment. They are very decisive and accurate on making decisions quickly when problems arise.
3. Self-Motivation: When the world has disappointed you in all aspects, he/she is able to self-motivate him/herself to the best spirits and fight all over.
4. Luck: It is always said that, in order to be successful, one has to depend 30% on themselves, and 70% on luck.
5. Peer pressure: He/she is not affected by peers around. For he/she knows what they really want and will not be affected by any thoughts that might demolish their plans. E.g: Having pessimistic friends around, always passing negative thoughts.
6. Desire: As much as they desire for something that is difficult to achieve, they understand the final outcome of their hardwork. The fire and passion must never die out.
7. Far sights: He/she is able to think further ahead of any other people. Forsee, predict the outcome and make a move earlier. Their thinking is unfathomable and unpredictable.
8. Ability to wear invisible mask: He/she can hide their true nature and blend into different situations. When he acts incapable, actually he is. When capable, actually he's not. It is hard to understand what his real intentions are, his mask is worn to hide underlying meanings. His words could mean many reasons behind. An art that not many people perform it well..
And he went on...
